Sometimes you do not even know that you can benefit from something because you do not know that this feature actually exists in the application or in the operating system that you are using. I recently learned that you can simultaneously rename multiple files on a Mac directory and this process is actually really easy.

To make the illustration a little bit easier, let us suppose that we have a list of twelve images, where we want to remove from their names the text Screen Shot, because we do not want to have that phrase in our titles. To do this, you need to go to the directory in which these files are located.

Then you need to select these files with Shift-click.

Then you need to go to the Action option at the top of the Finder window.

Then select Rename [number] Items  from the drop down menu:

A new window will open, where by default Replace Text is already chosen. Below that you have two fields where you can write the pattern that you want to find and the one you want to replace it with. To remove that phrase from the names of the files that we have chosen, we simply write Screen Shot at the Find: field and leave Replace with: empty:

After that, we simply need to hit Rename and see the renaming results:

If you are not content with the results, you can undo the changes by going to Edit and then Undo to revoke the renaming of the files.

There are other functions that are given, with which, Instead of replacing text, you can insert text, like date, counter etc. To test these, you can choose Add Text or Format functions in the small window that we used to replace our text.

When you choose Format, you can select three options for Name Format: Name and Index, Name and Counter and Name and Date.

You can then enter a name that you want to insert into Custom Format and after you are done with that, you can simply hit Rename.

This was a quick tip that I learned these days and decided to share with you, as you may need it sometimes. I hope you find it helpful just like me.
