Good morning, and happy Sunday!
I’m still recovering (read: catching up and readjusting my body clock) from YOW! 2018. I saw a lot of great talks there and I think for today’s edition I’ll just pick a few of my favorites that have previous versions available online.
In no particular order:
- Cat Swetel on The Metrics You Should Use But Don’t (there’s also some good stuff on how to present data in a meaningful way).
- Kevlin Henney with a look back at what was current in software development thinking in 1968 (it’s surprising how modern-seeming many of the hot topics were).
- Watch Chris Ford create classical music from first principles in Clojure. This was a mesmerizing talk at YOW.
- Casey Rosenthal: Deprecating Simplicity. This is actually a talk about building resilient systems. When you’re solving interesting problems at scale, “simplicity” is insufficient to save you.
- Michael Nygard on patterns and antipatterns he’s found (so far) for splitting a monolith into services.
Here’s some stuff I’ve published recently:
- Video from my keynote at the Keep Ruby Weird conference in Austin, TX is now online.
- Parts one and two of a three-part RubyTapas guest series on the rom-rb database persistence library:
- I’ve started opening up a bit of the RubyTapas behind-the-scenes process, starting with a video of my topic meeting with upcoming guest chef Brittany Martin! (It’s free, no membership required)
- Finally, for subscribers, there’s a RubyTapas December Update
Thanks for joining me for BRUNCH. Happy hacking, and see you next week!
