In a significant update to its communication platform, Google has introduced voice messaging capabilities to Google Chat for Workspace users. This new feature allows users to record and send voice messages directly within their chats, enhancing the versatility and convenience of the service.
The update was announced on the Google Workspace Updates blog, where the company detailed the functionality of the new feature. Users can now record messages by tapping a microphone icon, which replaces the previously grayed out send icon next to the photo button. The feature includes a live waveform visualization of the voice message and a timer, allowing users to play back their recording before sending.
This rollout is initially available only for paid Google Workspace accounts, with plans to enable transcription for voice messages in the coming months. Mobile users will be the first to experience this feature, with desktop support expected to follow soon.
Voice messages are treated as attachments for the purposes of Google Vault, Google Takeout, and Security Investigation Tool (SIT) moderation tools. Administrators have the option to disable this feature at the domain or organizational unit level if they choose to restrict file sharing in Chat.
The introduction of voice messaging to Google Chat is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to provide a more robust and flexible communication tool for its users. With this update, Google Workspace takes a step closer to competing with other popular messaging platforms that already offer voice messaging options.
