Time and Navigating with Systems Framework

I shared my thoughts on the differences on perception for the same amount of time depending on which side of a situation you are on, such as waiting to use a restroom and finish using a restroom. using the System 1 and System 2 framework from Daniel Kahneman.

Another interesting situation with sensation of time and the Systems framework:

Navigating

More specifically, the sensation of time when you going to somewhere new and going to somewhere you know.

In general, when you go somewhere new, even when you have a tool that tells you exactly how long it will take you to get there, it feels longer.

Lost in Navigation

When you are going to a place where you know, using the path you know, it feels shorter.

Confident in Navigation

Even though, in both instances, the distance and amount of time it takes is about the same.

Why?

My guess when using the Systems framework:

  • when you are going somewhere new, you are engaging System 2, that requires effort.
  • when you are using a known path to a familiar destination, you are engaging System 1, that is automatic.

When System 2 is working, you require more energy, more focus on the task.

System 1 takes less energy, you can even engage System 2 on another task while System 1 is working on the main task.

Why Different?

The system is working dictates the sensation of time, even though the amount is the same.

What’s interesting here over the restroom example is navigating to a destination requires active effort on the person in both situations.

How active is the question. This is a situation where one can directly experience the difference of the Systems in everyday life.

You just have to be conscious of it!
