Red Green Repeat Adventures of a Spec Driven Junkie

The Job of the News

I wrote about living your best life without the news. Why does the news exist?

I am not a sociologist or psychologist - so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I just want to offer a different perspective on the news.

The news is to show situations where new people are in a worse situation than the people watching.

That’s why the saying: “Bad news sells” supports this. The news is all about sharing a situation worse than average (or around that.) By having about situations worse than 50% of the population, they gain attention.

What News Does

After giving people give their attention and learn how bad it is for someone else (who is never the person reading the news), they want to feel OK about themselves.

Feeling Bad From the News

What action can one take to feel OK about themselves??

Do whatever is next to the bad news and what goes along with all news?

Something to buy!

That is how the news truly make money - by helping companies sell.

Feeling Good From the News

This is a perspective I developed after paying attention to the news less, getting news from actual people, and spending time in the advertising industry.

I’m not sure how true this is, again, I’m not a sociologist or psychologist.

I do see a connection with those associated with the news as well.

Good News Sites

At the same time, that’s why “good news” doesn’t catch on - even though everyone complains about all the “bad news” in the news. The “good news” is already part of the news - companies want to sell you something to feel better from all the bad news!

Also, with all the “good news” sites, how do you feel about yourself after seeing how good everyone else is??

Not. so. good.

🤷

Anywys, this is just a random observation that I want to put down and share. If it makes sense or I’m just crazy, I’d love to hear from you.
