The Wayne Gretzky Trade

Growing up in Edmonton, Alberta during the 1980s meant I was a hockey fan. With the best team in the National Hockey League at the time - until Wayne Gretzky trade happened.

This shocked everyone - one of the best players on the best team, traded??

For a long time, I did not understand why. Rumors were everywhere. I even remember my teacher sharing rumors during a class because that was the topic on everyone’s mind - even children!

Well, I finally attained clarity on the Wayne Gretzky Trade through a documentary: A King’s Ransom.

There is one important piece ommitted in the documentary that this YouTube video on the NHL Trade Tree covers that is essential about Wayne Gretzky’s original contract.

After seeing both - I have closure and new perspectives on the situation I did not (nor my classmates and teachers at the time!)

Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers played a big part of my childhood. Edmonton Oilers not winning as much after definitely affected how much I enjoy watching hockey.
