What is the a moneyball metric for business?

This won’t be an original idea – but I wonder if startups all chase the same metrics and therefore amazing businesses never thrive because they’re not recognisd and supported.

Moneyball (the book at least) was all about the fact that Billy Beane discovered a metric that others were ignoring - percentage to first base. Every other coach focused on much more heroic stats, such as percentage of hits and number of home runs.

I wonder if there’s something like that for business. There are many stats that are on everyone’s dashboard, such as churn, monthly active users. Most startups use the same methodologies, listen to the same podcasts, take notice of the same influencers, and so on.

What is the metric that everyone misses?
