Heroku Partners with GitHub to Offer Student Developer Program

[Update: October 3, 2022 - The Heroku for GitHub Students program is now live. Instructions for signing up for the program have been added to this post.]

One of the things I value about being a Salesforce employee is our commitment to community. We support education through giving, mentoring, and many other programs.

That commitment extends through our work on Heroku. Heroku is a powerful way to enter the Salesforce ecosystem, and we are proud of the number of students who have used the Heroku platform to build their careers.

GitHub Partnership

Today, we are announcing a new partnership with GitHub, which adds Heroku to their Student Developer Pack and gives students a credit of $13 USD per month for 12 months. This credit can be applied to any Heroku product offering, except for third-party Heroku Add-ons.

There's no substitute for hands-on experience, but for most students, real-world tools can be cost-prohibitive. That's why GitHub launched GitHub Education in 2014 to provide the education community with free access to the tools and events they need to shape the next generation of software development.

Through the Student Developer Pack, we will offer our students a credit of $13 USD per month for 12 months*. This credit can be applied to any Heroku product offering, including our new Eco Dynos, Mini Postgres, and Mini Heroku Data for Redis® plans. The $13 USD will cover the monthly cost of Eco dyno hours and one instance each of Mini Postgres and Mini Heroku Data for Redis®, or it can be used towards any Heroku Dynos and Heroku Add-on plans (except for third-party add-ons).

To sign up for the student program:

  1. Individuals applying for the offering must sign up for a Heroku account. If you already have an account, log in with your Heroku credentials.
  2. The Student Developer Pack is available for all verified students ages 13+, and anywhere in the world where GitHub is available. In order to use Heroku products, students must be 18 years of age. You can join at http://www.heroku.com/github-students/signup which prompts you to verify your GitHub Student status with your academic email address. Only current registrants at qualifying institutions will be approved.
  3. If the domain is questionable, or the school does not provide academic email, GitHub requires supporting documentation of current student status, such as a dated student ID or course registration for the current semester.
  4. After validating your student status, verify your Heroku account by providing a valid credit or debit card and verifying your billing information.
  5. After submitting billing and credit card information, your platform credits will be applied monthly per the program terms ($13/mo for 12 months*).

In addition to this new student program, we are actively working on a more inclusive, long-term Heroku solution to better support educational use cases. We are hoping to launch this for educators before the next school year.
