New Manager - Raise and Promotion Request: Relationships

This is a continuation of a series - the first article is here

After getting aligned significant results from team members that want a raise and/or promotion, the next most important thing is for them to build relationships.

For them to build relationships??

Yes, they need to build relationships, especially with their peers and any team members. Even though their desire is for themselves, everyone works in a team.

The worst thing that can be in a team is resentment because one team member receives special treatment.

As the team’s leader, there’s only so much you can do to placate resentment among team members - team members expect you to because it’s your job.

The best thing is to have team members that do want that raise or promotion actively develop relationships. When their raise or promotion happens, every team member will understand why and agree that is the right action for the team.

Hopefully, this will motivate additional team members to produce significant results and improve relationships.

The team member relationship building is also useful if your boss or boss’ boss checks on your team to validate your request. The team needs to be cohesive, especially around raises and promotions.

Next, adapting your process is important.
