Announcing new AWS Wavelength Zones in Denver and Seattle

Posted on: Dec 28, 2020

Today, we are announcing the availability of two new AWS Wavelength Zones on Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network in Denver and Seattle. Wavelength Zones are now available in 10 cities, including the previously announced cities of Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington DC.

AWS Wavelength and Verizon 5G Edge bring the power of the world’s leading cloud closer to mobile and connected devices at the edge of the Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband network. Wavelength embeds AWS compute and storage services at the edge of communications service providers’ 5G networks while providing seamless access to cloud services running in an AWS Region. By doing so, AWS Wavelength minimizes the latency and network hops required to connect from a 5G device to an application hosted on AWS. Among the many ultra-low latency use cases that Wavelength enables are 5G applications for smart manufacturing, industrial automation, autonomous driving, and applications that deliver interactive and immersive experiences, like game streaming, virtual reality, and in-venue experiences for live events.

Customers like HARMAN, Inception XR, and Skyward are using Verizon 5G Edge and AWS Wavelength to introduce innovative solutions. Skyward, a Verizon company, provides software and consulting for companies that use drones commercially. Skyward uses 5G and MEC to reduce the amount of hardware on the drones. By reducing weight and heat, drones can fly for longer distances and durations. Reduced amount of appliance-based computing resources on board also drives down cost significantly. HARMAN uses AWS Wavelength and Verizon 5G Edge to let its automotive consumers enjoy exceptional availability of all their favorite content wherever they may be. Inception is currently working with Verizon 5G Edge and AWS Wavelength to test how increased bandwidth and lower latency can create a step-change in the richness and resolution of mobile, immersive content for both businesses and consumers.
